Dr. Saeed Khan is a
Professor of Pathology at Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), Karachi,
Pakistan but his professional experience goes far beyond the field of academia.
He did his PhD in Microbiology and his postdoctoral training at Mullins
Molecular Retrovirology Lab, USA. Therefore, he holds extensive expertise in
virology, microbiology, molecular pathology, infectious diseases, public
health, biosafety and biosecurity.
He is currently
serving as the President of Pakistan Biological Safety Association through
which he trains individuals from various institutes on safe laboratory
practices, DURC, biorisk assessment and mitigation, and other similar
disciplines. He is also the Chairman of the Institutional Biosafety Committee
at DUHS where he ensures the effective functioning of the committee and
oversees the biosafety aspect of incoming projects. Dr. Saeed is also the member of Technical
Experts for establishing biosafety labs under the directives of Sindh
Government health Department. His expertise and acumen in matters related to
biosafety/biosecurity help warrant the establishment of labs as per
international standards. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, he stepped
forward to develop in-house diagnostic testing for SARS-CoV-2 to streamline
testing, despite resource limitations. He then became the Focal Person for
COVID-19 testing at DUHS. He was also elected the Focal Person for Provincial
Public Health Lab at DUHS, where routine surveillance is performed for
circulating pathogens and diseases in the community.
